December 12. EDI hosts Latvian Developers Network meetup on “Meet Hardware Description Language VHDL”. Event host is EDI researcher Mihails Pudzs. Event was divided in two parts, introduction on FPGA and VHDL and hands-on part where everyone had a chance to implement processor on FPGA which can execute some simple instructions.

Leading researcher Modris Greitans participate in practical conference “Program Horizon 2020 in Latvian – achievements and opportunities” which take place in University of Latvia Academic Center of Natural Sciences and is intended to evaluate the success of Latvian members of the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020 and highlight future opportunities and challenges. Participants included scientists, entrepreneurs, international project managers and implementers, representatives of ministries, Horizon 2020 program committee members, experts, project consultants and other interested parties. Signal processing laboratory researcher Kaspars Ozols from December 8-9 is participating in the international event “FLAG-ERA JTC 2016 Networking Event” in Rome, Italy. During the event new international contacts are established and EDI research results are disseminated.

„Elektronics day 2015”

On December 3, at Riga Technical College, Braslas street 16, (from 10:00 to 16:00) second year will take place Electronics Day. The event is organized by LETERA in collaboration with professional education Competence centre “Riga Technical College” and the National Centre of Education . During the event, will be able to watch and participate in the RTU Robotic workshop, EDI and training portal FIZMIX organized activities.

From 6. till 8. november three EDI staff (Emil Syundyukov, Krisjanis Nesenbergs and Richard Cacurs) in 5 people team “No.Sore” paricipated in Nordic largest hackatone “Junction 2015” in Helsinki, Finland. Team set up and present project for bedsore prevention and get three awards: – 1st – Bloomberg nomination (prize -5 Pebble watches); – 1st – “Best Beddit Hack” nomination (prize – 5 Beddit devices); – 1st – Samsung nomination (prize – 1 Samsung Galaxy S Gear 2 watches); During the project was also used in NRP projects SOHIS gained knowledge and developments in the field of sensor worn.


On November 6

On October 30 occur Latvian partners meeting of the project “Health and social indicators of participation in physical activities for children with disabilities” (nr. NFI/R/2014/070) at the Latvian Academy of Sport Education (LASE) to discuss the progress of project. This project is implemented in collaboration between the LASE, EDI, Riga Teacher Training and Education Management Academy, and Norwegian School of Sport Science and supported by the EEA/Norway Grants “Research and Scholarship” program in Latvia. On November 19 in the framwork of European Regional Development Fund Operational Programme “Entrepreneurship and Innovations” 2.1.1.3.3. activity “Scientific Institutions institutional capacity development” , director of Institute of Electronics and Computer Science Ieva Tentere and rector of University of Latvia Indriķis Muižnieks signed a partnership agreement.

In Riga Technical University from 5 till 6 November will be held International scientific conference “Achievements in wireless and optical communication 2015». The conference is organized by RTU in collaboration with the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (LV), Hochschule Wismar, University of Applied Sciences, Technology (Germany), Siauliai University (Lithuania), Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia), Technical University of Madrid (Spain), as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Latvian section. On October 20-22

Employees of the Institute are participating in an international conference and partner meeting event “ICT 2015 Innovate, Connect, Transform” in Lisbon, Portugal. In this event, Institute is represented by leading researcher Modris Greitans and researcher Kaspars Ozols from Digital signal processing laboratory, as well as researcher Krisjanis Nesenbergs from Cyber-physical systems laboratory.

During the event, Institute is promoted by presenting scientific achievements and scientific competences. It is expected to find new international cooperation partners with the goal of participating in European program Horizon 2020, as well as other project contests.

In Company Exigen Services Latvia and RTU Development Foundation annual scholarship competition University of Latvia student and our employee Emil Syundyukov receive Exigen Services Latvia scholarship for 2015./2016. study year. From 69 applications were selected 7 most prominent Latvian universitys information technology (IT) field students who will receive scholarships.

This year, for the first time, the European Researchers’ Night on September 25 also participates in the Electronics and Computer Science.

If you are interested in smart fabrics and garments, biometrics, embedded systems, image processing, intelligent transportation systems and other technologies – will be able to come visit and they see and try.

In Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association (LIKTA) member companies, including EDI, from 17 to 21 August takes place teacher exchange and training measures. On August 07

Company OÜ “Technopolis Group Esti” submit a report prepared by experts about the EDI organizational structure, functions, tasks and development potential, as well as recommendations for EDI development strategy and its content. The report was prepared within the project EDI-APE “The development and management efficiency improvement of Institute of Electronics and Computer Science.


On August 11

From 11 to 12 August EDI lead researcher Leo Seļavo and LSPA prof. Aija Kļaviņa attended the Norwegian School of Sports Science to participate in the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and Latvian state budget project “Health and Social Indicators of Participation in Physical Activities for Children with Disabilities” (NFI / R / 2014/070) – HIPPAC first work meeting. In this meeting was discussed the project first part methods to determine the qualitative and quantitative indicators of participation in health-related physical activity for children with various disabilities. All participants gave a positive evaluation opportunity to realize interdisciplinary scientific co-operation between sports science, health care and computer science professionals to strengthen human resources in scientific and academic potential of all participating research institutions.

Assistant Gita Krieviņa participate in the conference “Physiology in 2015” in Cardiff, UK, in order to present the project results – CT image segmentation, 3D object creation and adipose tissue volume calculation – “Blood pressure Segmented association with abdominal fat”, as well as build international cooperation contacts involved discussions on topical scientific issues and promote the achievements of the Institute.

Signal processing laboratory researcher Kaspars Ozols from June 1-2 is participating in “MESH7 information days” event in Poznan, Poland. During the event, MESH7 consortium partners are discussing about main scientific challenges in the field, assess the evaluation document of the MESH7 Project Outline and discuss as well as write full project proposal for the ECSEL 2015 call.

From 15 to 19 June, a leading researcher Uldis Grunde participates in Congress “10th Baltic Sea Science Congress in 2015” in Riga to present the Institute’s research results and establishing contacts with other national organizations, including meetings with Estonian partner “Marine Systems Institute” representative Urmas Lips, as well as engage in discussions and to discuss a common formation of H2020 project consortia.

From June 13. to June 17. researcher Mihails Pudžs attend The Danish Technical University in Copenhagen (Denmark) and provides information about the project SiKA research results and discuss the existing problems, as well as gaining knowledge of the latest advances in the field of image processing to be used for the further development of the project. Researcher R.Fuksis presente poster “Electron beam melting with Digital Image Processing in obtaining float-zone silicon rods – an advanced material for high-performance solar panels.”

EuroNanoForum 2015 is the largest nanotechnology event in Europe, and will bring together about 1,200 participants from 50 countries. EuroNanoForum 2015 main theme is “Nanotechnology for Europe’s competitiveness.”

Institute research assistant Ričards Cacurs and researcher Teodors Eglītis participate in innovative regional conference – Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (WIRE 2015) – in Latvia created an innovative technology presentation conference, and demonstrate the monitoring system prototype “SmartWear” (it can prevent scoliosis risk because of its ability teach the user to hold back correct in doctor defined state) as well as palm biometric system PALMS, which is able to recognize people after ribbed wrist and blood vessels.

EDI researcher Kristine Azarjana participates in Congress “23rd World Congress of Dermatalogy” in Vancouver (Canada) to present the report “Melanoma prognostics Factors Associated with Metastases” and discuss with industry experts in the field of melanoma.

Trip occurs within EU supported project “Innovative technologies for acquisition and processing of biomedical images” (InBiT).

EDI researchers Krišjānis Nesenbergs, Kaspars Ozols and lead researcher Modris Greitāns participate in Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (WIRE 2015), which is a major innovation, and regional development strategy forum in Europe. The Conference will focus on regional aspects relevant to the estimation on the impact of EU 2020 Strategy implementation and on the revision of the research and innovation policy priorities in the post-crisis period till 2020.

Institute of Electronics and Computer Science started new H2020 ECSEL project called: „Integrated Components for Complexity Control in Affordable Electrified Cars” (3Ccar)”. EDI is leading one task and is involved in 9 more tasks. On April 29

Biometrics research group has developed a novel bi-modal palm biometric system capable of touch-less capturing of two biometric parameters, palm veins and palm creases, synchronously with a single (RGB) image sensor. Latest research results regarding the development and testing of the newly developed system are summarized in a paper “Algorithms for a novel touchless bimodal palm biometric system” that will be published in the proceedings of International Conference on Biometrics (ICB 2015) in Phuket, Thailand from 19-22 May.

In 39th Latvian student scientific conference (in Engineering section) Agenskalns State Gymnasium student Kristofers Māris Gretāns (grade 11) will present his scientific research work “Thermal radiation use in control processes”, which is developed in Institute. On Thursday, April 9, at. 18:30 in Pacho music cafe bar (Mārstaļu Street 16, The Old Town) will take place «ResearchSlam» category II – second selection, where EDI researcher Atis Hermanis will come up with presentation ”Not smartphone, not smartwatch, but smart textile”. All are welcome to support!

«ResearchSlam» is a competition that already 4 years defy Latvian university students and PhD students to tell the public about they scientific research in simple way. Contest “ResearchSlam 2015” will take place in two categories in order to partition researches in social sciences from natural sciences. In all rounds contestants must perform their presentation in 10 minutes time. Speeches can be a song, experiment, story, sketch, dance or any other chosen way. Researcher Juris Sinica – Sinavskis attend conference ” Join Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)” in Lausanne, Switzerland, to develop international contacts and create cooperation in new projects, engage in discussions on topical scientific issues and promote the Institute’s scientific achievements.

Member of EDI Scientific Council researcher Krisjanis Nesenbergs participates in the international practical conference of global competitiveness of Baltic Sea Region. It aim is to compare the national smart specialization strategies and analyze the positive and disincentives factors for cross-border science and innovation development in context of collaboration of scientific institutions, companies, scientists and entrepreneurs in in the Baltic States and the Baltic and Scandinavian countries.


March 25 -26

Signal processing laboratory researcher Rihards Fuksis participating in the international event “H2020 Secure Societies Information Day” in Brussels, Belgium. During the event new international contacts are established and EDI research results are presented. During the event a presentation on project proposal idea of new biometric parameter usage for border control is presented. The goal is to find new international partners for preparation of Horizon 2020 project proposal.

Director – lead researcher Modris Greitāns and researcher Atis Herman participates in the international conference “The 2nd IEEE International Symposium on Inertial Sensors and Systems” – IEEE ISISS’2015 in Hawaii, USA, where they presents the article “Shape sensing based on acceleration and magnetic sensor system” participate in discussions and make a new international cooperation contacts.

Signal processing laboratory researcher Kaspars Ozols met with “Cloudnet” founder and cloud computing expert Neil McEvoy from Canada. During the meeting different aspects of security as well as current challenges and future perspectives were discussed.


On March 16 – 20

Signal processing laboratory scientific assistant Roberts Kadiķis is participating in the GPU Technology Conference. Emphasis of this years conference is the use of the graphical processing units for the deep learning.


On March 16-10

EDI lead researcher Leo Seļāvo participated in the meeting „European Summit on Innovation for Active and healthy Ageing”, Brussels, Belgium, with the goal of evaluating the opportunities for research and funding in this field, as well as meeting new potential partners for cooperation in research projects.


On March 09

On March 09 was held projekct “IKSA-CENTRS” working conference and it take place at IMCS UL. The project partners, the supervisory board, Ministry of Education, the State Education Development Agency, media representatives and decision-makers where introduced with the project progress. EDI researcher K.Nesenbergs presented a video about the development of EDI in the context of science infrastructure modernization.

Signal processing laboratory senior researcher Modris Greitans and researcher Kaspars Ozols from March 9 to 11 are participating in the international event “The Co-Summit 2015: Smart Industry: impact of software innovation” in Berlin, Germany. During the event new international contacts are established and EDI research results are disseminated.

On Friday – February 27 and Sunday – February 28 at exhibition “School 2015” RTU graduates and EDI employees – researchers Atis Herman, Teodors Eglitis and Rinalds Ruskuls as well as scientific assistant Richards Cacurs in RTU stand will introduce visitors with the monitoring system prototype “SmartWear ‘(it can prevent the risk of scoliosis because of its ability to teach the user to hold the back right, doctor defined state) as well as palm biometric system Palm, which is able to recognize people by the hand ribbing and blood vessels.

On February 13 and 20 the sessions of Computer Science and Information Technology of University of Latvia 73rd conference were held. The participants had a possibility listen to more then 20 presentations about quantum algorithms, beginnings of graphical Web design in Latvia, analysis of IT security incidents, development of high definition display wall and other theoretical and practical topics. Institute of Electronics and Computer Science was represented with two presentations:

EDI director and lead researcher Modris Greitāns and researcher Kaspars Ozols participate in conference Smart Specialization Strategy: New Approaches for Partnerships among Education, Research and Industry in Regions within the framework of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The Conference will be focused on the implementation of National/Regional Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation.
