EDI Director Modris Greitāns gives a guest lecture at the Art Academy of Latvia
29 October 2026

On October 29, the Art Academy of Latvia (LMA) hosted the guest lecture “EDI: the art of research and a place for art”, given by Dr.sc.comp. Modris Greitāns, Director of the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (EDI) and Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. The lecture brought together LMA doctoral students and other guests to explore where engineering and creativity meet, as well as EDI’s historical and present-day role in Latvia’s cultural landscape.
The audience learned about the institute’s key achievements through concrete examples that show the importance of creative thinking in developing innovative technologies:
DASP-lab system. An innovative technological solution that received the prestigious European IT Prize in 1997.
Event timers. High-precision technologies for measuring very short time intervals, the first in the world to apply digital signal processing to this task.
3D shape-sensitive fabric. A sensor system that captures surface shape changes in real time and displays them on a smart device.
Ultra-wideband radars. Technology for detecting and studying object parameters using short electromagnetic signals.
Special attention was given to EDI’s architectural heritage, artworks and preserved interior, which give the institute a unique place in Latvia’s cultural and art scene. The lecture concluded with a discussion on how artistic thinking and creativity shape the progress of modern science and technology.
