EDI researchers’ paper wins the Energies 2024 Best Paper Award
27 August 2026

The paper “Deep Learning for Wind and Solar Energy Forecasting in Hydrogen Production” by EDI researchers and their partners has won the Energies 2024 Best Paper Award. The award committee selects winners based on an overall evaluation of the originality and significance of the papers, taking into account citations and downloads.
The EDI authors are Arturs Nikulins, Kaspars Sudars, Edgars Edelmers, Ivars Namatevs and Kaspars Ozols. The study was carried out together with Vitalijs Komasilovs, Aleksejs Zacepins and Armands Kviesis from the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, and Andreas Reinhardt from Clausthal University of Technology (Germany).
The study presents a deep-learning-based system for short-term, localised weather forecasting that helps make better use of wind and solar energy in hydrogen production. The system analyses data from 25 weather stations across Latvia and produces forecasts one hour ahead, making it easier to plan when surplus renewable energy can be used to produce hydrogen. The study compares two types of neural networks, with the convolutional neural network delivering more accurate results. All code developed in the study is publicly available.
The paper was published in February 2024 and was developed within the ERA-NET project HydroG(re)EnergY-Env.
Congratulations to our colleagues on this significant international recognition!
