EDI Director Modris Greitāns participated in the international conference “Towards a Futureproof European Research Area: Boosting Trust, Integrity, and Resilience”, where European science policy makers and researchers discussed the resilience of the European Research Area in the context of the current geopolitical situation.
The conference focused on research sustainability, public trust in science, research security, and the balance between open science principles and security requirements. Participants also discussed the role of scientists in policymaking, setting research priorities, and the need to strengthen coordination within the European research ecosystem.
During the conference, a dedicated meeting of representatives from Eastern European countries was also held to discuss the development of dual-use research and its importance in strengthening security in Eastern Europe and across Europe as a whole. Discussions focused on opportunities for closer regional cooperation, coordinated funding efforts, and the development of joint initiatives. The meeting brought together representatives from Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and other countries.
As a result of the conference, participants agreed to continue strengthening cooperation among Eastern European research organisations, including plans to organise a thematic workshop in Warsaw aimed at fostering the development of joint projects and advancing research activities important for the security of Europe’s eastern border.
