On Wednesday, January 7, the “Research Latvia 2026” calendar and accompanying traveling exhibition were officially unveiled at the Latvian Academy of Culture’s Gara House. The event was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science in collaboration with the Research Latvia.
The 2026 calendar highlights 12 Latvian scientific institutes and their researchers – science ambassadors who represent various fields of research and illustrate the diversity, international competitiveness, and public significance of Latvian science. The calendar is part of a larger project – a traveling exhibition with 12 scientists’ stories and video clips, which will be on display throughout the year at various universities, institutes, and public spaces throughout Latvia.
Scientist of the Month for September: Jānis Ārents, Senior Researcher at the Robotics and Machine Perception Laboratory of the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science. In his scientific work, he studies how robots are able to navigate complex environments, understand human instructions, and adapt to new tasks. Jānis Ārents’ research makes a significant contribution to the development of robotics and the improvement of human-robot collaboration, especially in industrial, natural, and non-standard environments
Until January 30, the traveling exhibition will be on display at the Latvian Academy of Culture’s Gara House and Daugavpils University. After that, it will be on display at scientific institutes, universities, cultural institutions, and elsewhere. Visitors to the exhibition will not only have the opportunity to learn about 12 Latvian institutes, but also to watch video materials about each of the 12 scientists using the attached QR codes.
For the ninth year, the “Research Latvia” calendar serves as an important platform for promoting the work of Latvian scientists, fostering public understanding of the role of science in the sustainable development of the country and Europe.
