On August 25, 2026, Thomas Spazier, Head of the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy in Latvia, arrived for a familiarization visit at the “Institute of Electronics and Computer Science,” where he was welcomed by Deputy Director Dr. Sc.Ing. Kaspars Ozols and innovation commercialization expert Egils Bēriņš. The Deputy Director gave a presentation and explained EDI’s extensive experience in collaborating with global companies primarily based in Germany and Austria. Thomas Spazier asked the many questions about project that EDI developed together with Infineon company and about the collaboration with technology developers and scientific institutes , universities based in Graz, Austria. Interesting issue was to discuss about EDI scientists experience with self-driving car developments. Later during the visit several innovative technologies developed in recent years by scientists at the six EDI laboratories were reviewed and demonstrated. The scientists were happy to answer Thomas Spazier’s questions. There were many questions about timer and ultrasound technologies when Dr. Sc.Ing. Aleksejs Tatarinovs demonstrated how ultrasound can be used both in medicine and in studying the durability and possible damage of wind turbine blades. Toms Račinskis demonstrated wearable devices and clothing with integrated sensors, while Oskars Teikmanis provided an excellent demonstration of the various possibilities of IoT (Internet of Things) technologies. The greatest interest and the most questions were directed toward the robotics technologies and drone systems presented by Dr.Sc.Comp. Pēteris Račinskis.
