On December 31, 2025, the reorganization of the Institute of Physical Energy (FEI) was completed, with the institute being merged into the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (EDI). The consolidation was implemented as part of the European Union Recovery Fund project No. 5.2.1.1.i.0/2/24/I CFLA/006 “Expanding the capacity of the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science with a focus on energy research (E-EDI)”.
The aim of the consolidation is to establish an internationally recognized, multidisciplinary scientific institute in Latvia that is actively involved in international consortia and research projects, conducting research in computer science, electronics, information and communication technologies (ICT), energy and related sectors. This step is in line with the priorities of the national science and innovation policy, while strengthening Latvia’s position in the European Research Area.
From January 1, 2026, EDI will take over FEI employees and the infrastructure at the institute’s disposal, expanding its expertise in energy and related natural sciences, engineering, and technology sectors by reorganizing the recently established Energy Research Center. Its main research areas are:
- Complex analysis of the development of sustainable energy systems and the development of integrated modeling tools for research into current energy, environmental and climate issues;
- Development of innovative solutions by integrating modern information and communication technologies into the sustainable and smart development of the energy sector;
- Research into the rational and efficient use of energy resources.
Combining the acquired energy research expertise with EDI’s existing expertise in ICT, data analytics, and digital solutions will promote an interdisciplinary approach to solving current industrial and societal challenges.
“Integrating energy research into the EDI structure will increase the institute’s scientific capacity and strengthen its potential for international cooperation, which will also help to promote the growth and excellence of scientific staff. The consolidation is a significant step towards the creation of a modern, sustainable, and competitive multidisciplinary research and technology institution in Latvia, similar to those operating in virtually all developed European countries,” emphasises Modris Greitāns, Director and senior Researcher at the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science.
The consolidation significantly expands opportunities for cooperation with business and industry, particularly in the fields of smart energy, digital technologies and sustainable solutions. It creates a stable foundation for the development of new technologies, the transfer of innovation, and the practical application of research results, thereby also promoting the country’s economic development.
