EDI Lead Researcher Rihards Novickis and Electronics Engineer Sergejs Umnovs participated in the final evaluation event of the ARCHIMEDES project in Brno, Czech Republic, representing the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (EDI). During the event, the results of the ARCHIMEDES project were presented to experts from the European Commission, including the third supply chain demonstrator – an electric glider-type aircraft featuring an innovative battery system integrated into its wings.

One of the developments contributing to this application was a quantum sensor that could potentially be used as part of a battery monitoring system. In collaboration with international partners from Germany, the Institute of Applied Quantum Technologies (AquT), EDI researchers demonstrated the developed quantum sensor technology to the European Commission experts. The development includes the world’s smallest optical-fibre-based quantum sensor head while maintaining its performance. EDI provided the heterogeneous readout system, comprising analogue electronics, digital electronics at the chip level, embedded software implemented for a RISC-V processor, a user interface application, and numerous algorithms required for the operation of the sensor.
