On July 17, 2025, a significant anniversary was marked with a festive event and genuine pride – the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science.

By Decision No. 283 of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Council of Ministers of the Latvian SSR on May 31, 1960, on June 1, 1960, the Institute of Electronics and Computing Technology (ESTI) was established, based on Computing Centre of the Institute of Physics, Academy of Sciences and the Electronic Machines Laboratory of the Institute of Energy and Electrical Engineering. By Decision No. 5/2 of the Presidium of 17 July 1992, the institute was reorganised into a non-profit organisation of the Latvian Academy of Sciences – the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (EDI).

Employees, partners, and guests gathered at the celebration to look back on the institute’s rich history, achievements, and path of development. A small exhibition was opened in honor of the anniversary, reflecting the institute’s development over the years, which can still be viewed in the EDI lobby.

During the event, a video entitled “65 Years of EDI – A Story About People, Ideas and the Future!” was presented, which was created in collaboration with a professional video filming company OVER.LV (https://over.lv/). The video tells the story of our 65 years, which began in 1960 and continues today!

During the event, words of gratitude were expressed to current employees who have worked at the institute for half of EDI’s existence, which is at least 32 years and 6 months, acknowledging their long-term contribution and loyalty.

These employees include:

  • Modris Greitāns;
  • Jolanta Beitāne;
  • Mihails Broitmanis;
  • Ligita Cēse;
  • Kārlis Kazeks;
  • Ints Mednieks;
  • Uldis Grunde.

During the celebration, special recognition was also given to the institute’s structural units – those that form the basis of its daily work and drive the institute’s growth and innovation. Currently, the institute has the following structural units:

  • Signal Processing Laboratory;
  • Space Technology Laboratory;
  • Robotics and Machine Perception Laboratory;
  • Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory;
  • Integrated Circuits and Systems Laboratory;
  • Energy Research Center Laboratory;
  • Technical and Administrative Department;
  • Accounting Department;
  • Management.

With words of congratulations and gestures of gratitude, guests honored the historical contribution and achievements of the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science over the years of its existence. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our guests, whose presence and support made this event particularly meaningful.

During the event, the institute’s new terrace was unveiled for the first time – a place that will serve as a space for creative ideas and for colleagues to meet. Guests were invited to enjoy champagne and fruit on the new terrace.

On this date, the EDI logo was also unveiled for the first time, which will now adorn the institute’s wall, symbolically strengthening its visual identity in the future.
