From June 30 to September 2, Riga will host the second “Urban Mobility Incubator”, to facilitate mobility solution development, deployment and testing in Riga by providing up to 5,000 EUR support per team. In addition, teams will receive tailored mentoring sessions, lectures, and hands-on prototyping sessions with industry experts. Registration is open till June 17, 2022.
The second incubation program was launched after a successful incubator program in 2021, with six new start-ups operating in the micromobility and climate-neutral mobility fields. The “Urban Mobility Incubator” project is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology for Urban Mobility (EIT Urban Mobility) and organised by the innovation movement “VEFRESH” together with the local ecosystem partners Riga City Council and Riga Technical University (RTU). The partnership provides fast, convenient and optimal support for the development and deployment of innovative technologies in the urban environment, which is an improved model of the current work process.
Why support the mobility sector in particular? According to the European Public Health Alliance, urban mobility creates 40% of all CO2 emissions from road transport and up to 70% of other transport pollutants in the European Union. However, by promoting innovation development and transforming urban mobility, we can improve the quality of life, reduce costs, and contribute to a reduction of harmful side effects of urban mobility.
The “Urban Mobility Incubator” follows a challenge-driven innovation approach and focuses on active and future mobility, energy and public transport, pollution reduction, and more. Find out more information about the incubator at: https://www.urbanmobility.io/.
The “Urban Mobility Incubator” program is designed bottom-up – based on good and bad experiences by startups in the mobility field. Thereby, it helps to overcome the industry’s main obstacles – the lengthy process of receiving deployment permissions, and tailored mentoring testing products with clients. The chosen teams will participate in regular development planning, lectures on customer attraction, marketing, prototyping, and related work sessions to use the new knowledge in practice. The program will happen in a hybrid format, holding the prototyping and piloting sessions in Riga, Latvia.
This year the incubator will pick 6 to 10 teams for participation. The program is open to both teams at an early stage of development as well as established start-ups looking to boost their product TRL and implement products in a real city environment.

VEFRESH is an open innovation movement brought together in 2019 by the largest companies in the VEF area based in Riga, Latvia, to develop an urban mobility ecosystem.
The project is co-funded by the EIT Urban Mobility, the European Union structure initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The EIT’s Urban Mobility aims to foster positive change in mobility to make cities more livable. More information at www.eiturbanmobility.eu.
