During the INSIDE Connect 2025 event held in Malaga on 3rd and 4th of September, the EDI’s senior researcher Rihards Novickis had the opportunity to present two related talks titled: “What’s Next in Quantum Technologies: Quantum Sensing” and “Engineering & Scaling Quantum Sensing”.

These sessions explored both the state-of-the‐art and future directions for quantum sensing, focusing on practical challenges such as sensitivity limits, robustness to environmental noise, and methods for scaling up from lab‐scale setups to industrial applications. Rihards illustrated several use cases, including imaging, navigation, and timing.

A core challenge of the quantum sensing technologies is the scale-up: bringing the quantum sensing technologies from proof-of-principle toward market-readiness. Some of the key topics include manufacturing challenges, reproducibility, calibration, and the importance of collaboration between research, industry, and standardisation bodies. I also addressed strategies for bridging research outcomes into real-world applications, including the optimisation of trade-offs between complexity and performance, and ensuring cost-effectiveness to achieve tangible impact across sectors.

We would like to thank the organizers for inviting us to participate in INSIDE Connect 2025 and for the opportunity to share our experience in the development of quantum technologies.
