The Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (EDI) participated in an autonomous vehicle demonstration event held in Ādaži on 18th June 2025. The event, organized in collaboration with Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC) and Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT), is part of an ongoing European research initiative under the Horizon Europe project AUGMENTED CCAM, which aims to advance both physical and digital infrastructure for connected and automated mobility systems.

Three key scenarios were showcased to the public during the event to evaluate the autonomous vehicles’ ability to safely navigate complex traffic environments and respond to unexpected obstacles. These scenarios involved interactions with real-world traffic participants, such as municipal police officers and road maintenance workers:

  1. Emergency Vehicle Interaction
  2. Roadworks Avoidance
  3. Avoiding Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in Low-Visibility Conditions using a roadside unit with a thermal camera.

In addition to the real-life demonstrations, the event featured a panel discussion on the future of autonomous transport in Latvia. The panel included experts from various sectors, discussing the challenges and opportunities in integrating autonomous vehicles into Latvia’s transport system. Kaspars Ozols, Deputy Director at EDI, contributed to the discussion, highlighting the role of intelligent infrastructure in enabling safe and efficient autonomous driving, and the importance of adapting regulatory frameworks to support innovation in this field.
