The aim of the study is to understand, compare and analyze low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies based on the latest scientific publications and research. As well as to conduct research and comparison of electronic components available on the market with the following purpose-designed NB-IoT and LTE-M devices:

  • Air quality device with temperature, humidity, and VOC sensors;
  • Air quality device with a CO₂ sensor;
  • Concrete curing (wire deformation) sensor;
  • Cigarette smoke detection device for cars.

To achieve the goals and objectives, the following actions have are be carried out: the fundamentals, history, and main application areas of LPWAN technologies have been identified and described. Literature from the past 10 years on this topic has been reviewed, and a comparison between the main LPWAN technologies has been made.
